On August 19th I visited the Scenic Rim Brewery in Mount Alford, Queensland. This is a great little Brewery/Cafe/Restaurant with a good selection of beers. The beers that I sampled were:
1. Shazza, 3.5% abv, this is a mid-strength that is gold in colour and has a subtle sweet citrus aroma. It has a lovely malt initial taste and then well balanced fruitiness on a nice hop bitter finish.
2. Digga’s, 4.5% abv, this is a Pale Ale with a golden colour and a sweet aroma citrus and floral hops. It has a great tropical and citrus fruit flavour on a gentle malt background taste.
3. Fat Man, 4.5% abv, this is a maroon ale, a Queensland take on an Irish Red Ale. It has a dark amber colour and a subtle malt aroma. It has a wonderful caramel malt flavour and then a generous hop bitter finish.
4. Sheep’s Back, 4.5% abv, this is a spiced apple beer float, in other words a Fat Man beer with a dollop of apple purée in it. It has a cloudy caramel amber colour with a gentle malt aroma. It has a smooth malty taste and then a mild apple-cider like twang on the finish. Quite nice!
5. Ginger Extra Dry, 4.8% abv, this is a beer with a ginger flavour and a subtle sweet ginger aroma. It has a sweet malt beer flavour and then a ginger spice taste and gentle bitterness on the finish.
6. Phar Que, 6.5% abv, this is a Belgian Abbey Ale that is dark amber in colour with a malt aroma that gives hints of coffee. It has a lovely full mouth feel and a rich sweet flavour of raisins and fruit on a gentle coffee bitter finish. Delicious!
I would like to thank Mick, the owner/ brewer for his time and hospitality when I visited. This is a wonderful brewery and well worth the visit.
