Lobethal Bierhaus

On April 28th, I visited my favourite South Australian Brewery, the Lobethal Bierhaus. This is a wonderful brewery that has some great beers and a fantastic menu for meals. Alistair, the owner and man in charge is the perfect host.

The beers that I sampled were:

Lentil Pale Ale, 5.0% abv, this is a golden coloured ale with a mild sweet aroma. It has a good bitter taste and a gentle clean finish. This is a lot better use for lentils than the hippies of the 70s had.

Bohemian Pilsner, 4.8% abv, this is a straw coloured Czech style Pilsner with a lovely yeast aroma. It has a nice malty initial palate and then a mild hop bitter finish. Very true to the style.

Hefeweizen, 5.4% abv, this is a light straw coloured wheat beer with fruity, yeast aromas. It has flavours of bananas and vanilla. This Bavarian style beer is refreshingly good.

Lisa, 5.0% abv, this is a straw coloured German style Kolsch with fennel and orange zest added, it has a subtle citrus aroma. It has a wonderful smooth taste with hints of liquorice. Very nice!

Goodbier, 4.8% abv, this is a dry hopped pilsner style beer with a straw colour and a citrus aroma. It has beautiful citrus and tropical fruit flavours that are balanced well with a gentle hop bitter finish.

Pale Ale, 5.6% abv, this is a golden copper coloured ale with a mild malt aroma. It has a smooth malt taste and then a good hop bitterness on the finish. Very well balanced.

India Pale Ale, 5.9% abv, this is a golden coloured ale with sweet tropical fruit and floral aromas. It has a great malt initial taste and then transitions smoothly into a lovely bitterness on a crisp finish. Excellent!!

Red Truck Porter, 5.2% abv, this Porter has a dark amber brown colour and a subtle coffee malt aroma. It has a beautiful malt driven taste with hints of coffee and dark chocolate. Delicious!

Dark Spiced Christmas Ale, 7.9% abv, this is a dark brown ale with a spicy malt aroma. The taste has a wonderful malty backbone with hints of nutmeg, ginger and spice. This is Christmas pudding in a glass. YUM!!

Little Devil/ Devils Choice, 9.0% abv, this is a golden coloured, Belgian strong ale with a subtle, sweet malt aroma. It has a wonderful smooth, complex, sweet malt flavour. It really is truly magnificent!!

Creme Brûlée, 7.2% abv, this is a dark brown coloured dessert beer that has wonderful, sweet, spicy caramel flavours that linger around the whole mouth and a smooth, creamy texture. WOW!!

Extra Hopped IPA, 5.9% abv, this IPA has a hazy golden colour and strong, sweet citrus aroma. It has flavours of citrus, passionfruit and tropical fruits before a big hop bitter finish. Very good.

Red Menace, Belair Irish Red Ale, 5.0% abv, this is a red/ amber coloured Ale with a mild malt aroma. It has a lovely full malt palate with hints of nuts and then moves to a nice hop bitter finish.

Bruce, 3.5% abv, this mid strength ale has a golden colour and a sweet, citrus hop aroma. It has a great hoppy taste and then a lingering bitter finish. Very sessionable.

Saison, 5.4% abv, this is a straw coloured farmhouse ale with fruity yeast aromas. It has great fruity flavour on a lovely light, dry finish. Very refreshing.

Chocolate Oatmeal Stout, 5.8% abv, this black coloured stout has aromas of dark chocolate and coffee. It has a wonderful full malt flavour with strong hints of chocolate. Lovely!!

Nitro Stout, 5.8% abv, this black stout has mild malt aromas. It settles from the bottom, like a Guinness, and it has a creamy smooth texture and a lovely malt backbone with a gentle bitterness on the finish. Very much like Guinness.
