Hemmingways Brewery

On the 13th June I visited Hemingways Brewery in the North Queensland town of Port Douglas. They have a wonderful setting on the Marina with a deck with great views. They have five regular beers and one seasonal. I gave them all a taste.

4 Mile, (seasonal), 4.7% abv, this is a White Lager with a straw colour. It is inspired by the Belgian style wheat beers and has a subtle aroma of apples. It is light and crisp with a late, mild hop bitter finish.

Mrs Watson’s, 3.5% abv, this is a Small Ale that is orange in colour with a sweet, hop aroma. It has a light malt backbone and a fruity, citrus taste followed by a lovely hop bitter finish.

The Prosecutor, 4.5% abv, this is a Pilsner that is golden in colour with a subtle sweet aroma. It has a sweet citrus-like initial palate then a strong, lingering hop bitter finish.

Hard Yards, 4.7% abv, this is a chocolate coloured Dark Lager with a coffee malt aroma. It has a wonderful malty taste with hints of coffee, chocolate and biscuit. Smooth and full of flavour.

Pitchfork Betty’s, 5.1% abv, this is an Australian style Pale Ale that is light straw in colour. It has a nice initial palate of sweet malt with hints of passionfruit and tropical fruit with a mild hop bitterness on the finish.

Doug’ s Courage, 5.6% abv, this is a dry hopped IPA that is golden in colour with a sweet citrus aroma. It has fruity initial palate followed by a huge, complex hop bitterness. This beer is all about the hops!!

The Brewery makes beers that suit the beer drinking climate of Port Douglas and are definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.
