Today I made the trek out to Bullant Brewery in Bruthen. They have a nice setting and do meals as well as having a reasonable range of beers.
The beers that I sampled were:
1. Double Bridges Imperial Pale Ale, 5.8% abv, this copper coloured IPA has a sweet floral aroma. It has a strong hop bitter palate and finish with subtle hints of citrus.
2. Hells Gate Imperial Pale Ale, 6.8% abv, this golden coloured ale has a mild citrus aroma. It has a lot more hop bitterness than the previous IPA, with only a slight initial taste of malt followed by a strong lingering hop bitter finish.
3. Pig and Whistle Brown Ale, 4.7% abv, this ale has a dark brown colour and very little aroma. It has a malty taste with a subtle hop finish.
4. Piano Bridge Stout, 6.7% abv, this black coloured beer has a subtle coffee malt aroma. It has a malty taste with hints of liquorice and a very mild hop bitterness.
5. Munich Dunkel, 4.7% abv, this is a dark copper coloured beer with a very light malt aroma. It has a sweet mild malt flavour and a slight hop bitter finish.
The brewery also produces a Pale Ale, a Wheat Beer, a Pilsner, a Kolsch and a mid strength Beer. The beers that I tried were fine but the service and attitude of the staff left a lot to be desired. The manner of the barman ( I was later told that he is the owner) could only be described as rude. We had decided to have a meal and after being shown to a table we waited for fifteen minutes and had still not been offered a menu. After asking for them, we ordered and waited a further thirty five minutes for our food. To add to the insult we were slugged an additional 12% on top of the bill for service.
After leaving the brewery I spoke to a local who informed me that the attitude of the owner puts a lot of people off. He must realise that there is more to running a brewery than just making beer.
My final opinion of the Bullant is that it is Bullsh*t!!
