Beard and Brau Farmhouse Brewery

On August 24th I visited Malty Grain in Windaroo, Queensland. This is the cellar door and bar for Beard and Brau Farmhouse Brewery of Tamborine. The venue is also a restaurant, wedding chapel and function centre. The beers that I sampled were:

M.A.R.G.O.T. , 3.5% abv, this stands for mid-strength ale reduced gluten on Tamborine. It is a hazy, light amber colour with a subtle sweet aroma. It has a nice solid flavour on a mild bitterness and a crisp dry finish. It is made with 100% Australian ingredients and is a great option for any coeliac.

Red Deer Amber, 3.5% abv, this is an amber coloured Ale with a sweet malt aroma. It has a lovely malty palate and then transitions into a fruity, mild bitter finish. Nice and quite sessionable.

Black Snout, 5.5% abv, this is a smooth flow, milk stout that is black in colour with a good malt aroma. It has a velvety, creamy mouth feel and a wonderful, sweet, full, roasted malt flavour with hints of chocolate. Very good!

Bon Chiens, 7.9% abv, this is a traditional farmhouse style beer made with honey and using champagne yeast. It is a hazy light amber colour with a lovely sweet honey and lantana aroma. It has a magnificent, smooth, sweet honey and complex malt flavour and a silky full mouth feel. This one is really special!!

Red Tail, 5.1% abv, this is an Amber Ale with a great red amber colour and a thick white head with an aroma of sweet malt. It has a wonderful complex malt flavour with strong hints of toffee and chocolate then a mild fruity bitterness on a clean dry finish. Very nice!

Golden Paw, 4.5% abv, this is an American style common ale that has a golden colour and a creamy head with a floral, grassy aroma. It is a full bodied beer with a fruity flavour on a crisp dry finish.

Double Red, 6.2% abv, this is an Imperial Red Ale that is a cloudy amber colour with a thick creamy head and sweet caramel and floral hop aroma. It has a nice caramel malt flavour and then a mild hop bitterness on the finish. Very good. However, the bottle I had was over gassed and sprayed when it was opened, what a messy waste of an expensive beer.

I would like to thank Chris and Tanya for their hospitality and Chris for giving up his time to explain his beers to me. They have some great beers and Malty Grain is well worth visiting.
