On Tuesday the 10th of October I visited the Batch Brewing Co in Marrickville, New South Wales. This brewery was started by Chris and Andrew four years ago. They originally started brewing in the backyard and it grew into the great brewery that it is today. They have a capacity of 34800 litres and put through between six and eight brews a week at present, with the ability to expand that to ten brews a week when they were run to full capacity. They use Australian ingredients where possible.
They run brewery tours on the weekend at both 12:30 and 3:30. At the brewery they have ten beers on tap, with six of these regularly changing. Their four core beers are; Just Beer Lager, American Pale Ale, West Coast IPA and Elsie Milk Stout. The best seller is their American Pale Ale which is also the original beer of the brewery.
They have food trucks visit the venue from Thursday through to Sunday that vary in what they offer. Their trading hours are between 10am and 8pm Monday to Sunday. They have a larger choice of beers for takeaway than on tap.
The beers that I sampled were:
Summer Farmhouse Saison, 4.1% abv, this is a slightly hazy straw colour with a yeasty Saison aroma. It true to the style and has yeast flavour of grains and a subtle spiciness.
Hopface Fillah, 4.5% abv, this is a dry hopped sour with a hazy straw colour and a subtle yeast aroma. It has a crisp, refreshing flavour and a gentle sour finish.
Hayz New England Sour, 4.3% abv, this is a hazy straw colour and has fruity passionfruit aroma. It has lovely passionfruit flavour and then a nice refreshing, slightly sour dry finish. This beer was dry hopped with 12.5 kg of hops, but their influence is subtle.
Just Beer, 4.6% abv, this is a Lager with a golden colour and a malt aroma. It has a malt flavour and then a clean, crisp, finish. This beer is made with all Australian ingredients.
Das Bock, 7.6% abv, this is a strong Lager with an amber colour and a nice caramel malt aroma. It has a wonderful full malt flavour of toffee and caramel. Really enjoyable!
American Pale Ale, 5.2% abv, this has a golden colour and a tropical fruity aroma. It has a sweet malt initial taste and then a fruitiness before a mild bitterness on the finish .
West Coast IPA, 5.8% abv, this has a golden colour and a citrus and pine aroma. It has a sweet tropical and stone fruit flavour and then a strong, resinous, hop bitter finish.
Double Rainbow XXPA, 8.8% abv, this has a golden colour and a super sweet tropical and passionfruit aroma. It has a sweet malty taste and then a citrus, grapefruit flavour before a big, lingering, hop bitter finish.
Elsie The Milk Stout, 4.4% abv, this Stout was poured on nitro and has a black colour and a dark creamy head with a strong roasted coffee aroma. It has a smooth mouth feel and a sweet malty taste and then a creamy, roasted coffee bitter finish.
MacBatch Oak Aged Heavy Ale, 7.0% abv, this Wee Heavy inspired Ale has spent six months in the fermenter with oak chips. It has a dark amber colour and an aroma of sultanas and raisins soaked in alcohol ready for a Christmas pudding. It has rich flavour of fruit and Christmas cake. Wow! This is special!
Batch Brewing Co are producing some fantastic beers and should definitely be on your itinerary if you are in the Marrickville area. I would like to thank Cree for her hospitality when I visited.
